Nestled in the heart of the South Wollo Zone, just 10 kilometers from Dessie City, Boru Meda General Hospital stands not only as a medical institution but also as a symbol of resilience, transformation, and hope. Serving over 4.5 million people, the hospital’s legacy dates back more than 75 years—marking a remarkable journey of growth, service, and healing.
📜 Humble Beginnings
Boru Meda General Hospital was established on Hamle 7, 1947 E.C. by American missionaries from the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM). Initially, it focused on treating leprosy, skin diseases, and eye conditions—ailments that were widespread and largely underserved in Ethiopia at the time.
The missionaries brought not just medicine, but compassion, dedication, and a long-term vision of service to the region. Their presence laid the foundation for an institution that would grow far beyond its original scope.
🇪🇹 A Shift in Stewardship
In 1971 E.C., the hospital was officially handed over to Ethiopian administration. What could have been a challenging transition became a seamless continuation of service, thanks to local professionals who took the lead with passion and expertise.
This period marked the start of Boru Meda’s expansion into a full-fledged general hospital, while still retaining its strong legacy in dermatology and ophthalmology.
